Local Area / Activities

This region has plenty to offer, apart from St Rémy de Provence that is a charming classical little town, capital of the Alpilles with all the amenities, boulangeries, little boutiques, quaint pavement cafes and excellent restaurants. On its winding cobbled lanes you will discover the small squares, historic buildings, churches and museums and on Wednesday the stunning weekly market will offer you the opportunity to discover local products and handicrafts which is a must to see, all at your door step. Or just a few kilometres by car you are in the beautiful scenery of the Alpilles Hills but also of the ruined castle that dominates the landscape surrounding Les Baux de Provence. The castle can be traced back to the 10th century. The local people finally destroyed it in 1632 to bring an end to the centuries of conflicts, revolts, sieges and wars of religion, which had taken place there. Today, quaint artisan shops and restaurants line the tiny cobbled streets. Other villages picturesque can be found at Mausanne les Alpilles and at Eygaliéres.

A little further north of St Rémy is the magnificent walled city of Avignon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which boasts the gothic 'Palace of the Popes', a wonder not to be missed. Awe-inspiring Roman buildings and ruins are scattered everywhere in this Ancient Roman Province, the impressive triple-tiered aqueduct of the Pont du Gard and the massive arena in Arles are certainly worth a visit. Further southwest, under an hour's drive, is the Camargue National Park, a fascinating wetland known for its pink flamingos, fighting bulls and wild horses. The Mediterranean sea, the sandy beaches at Ste-Maries-de-la-Mer are about an hour by car.

Going east into the Luberon there is also the enchanting village of Gordes, one of the most beautiful villages in the South of France, is on your doorstep and is well worth a visit. Its century old cobbled streets, tall stone houses built against the rock and the imposing castle are the unique setting for many art exhibitions and musical festivals taking place during the summer season. Other villages such as Menerbes, Bonnieux, Fontaines de Vaucluse are an absolute must to visit as well if you are seeking to experience the essence of Provence. And don't miss the pretty village of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, with its canals, narrow streets and antiques market.
