Villas on the Atlantic Coast: Open Beaches, Pine Forests and a Classic French Summer

The Atlantic coast of France south of Brittany, the Vendée, the Charente-Maritime and the Landes, is where the French have been spending their summer holidays for generations. It is not the place that international villa travellers tend to name first. And that, increasingly, is its advantage. Long beaches of fine sand, backed by pine forests, with reliable summer sunshine, warm enough water for swimming and a surf culture that has been growing since the 1960s: the Atlantic coast does a specific kind of summer holiday extremely well, and it does it with a directness and ease that more fashionable destinations have sometimes lost.

The Vendée: Family Beaches and Open Country

The Vendée is the northern section of the Atlantic coast south of the Loire, and it is among France's most popular domestic holiday destinations. The beaches, Saint-Jean-de-Monts, Les Sables-d'Olonne, La Tranche-sur-Mer, are wide, flat, south-facing and excellent for families with young children. The water warms up reliably through June and is at its best from mid-July into August.

Inland from the coast, the Vendée bocage, a landscape of hedgerows, waterways and small villages, offers cycling and walking country of quiet beauty. The Marais Poitevin, the so-called Green Venice, is a network of waterways through marshland west of Niort that is accessible by flat-bottomed boat and utterly distinctive. The area around Puy du Fou, France's most spectacular historical theme park, adds a major family attraction to the region.

The Charente-Maritime: Royan, La Rochelle and Coastal Variety

The Charente-Maritime is the most varied section of the Atlantic coast. La Rochelle, a handsome city of arcaded streets, a harbour dominated by medieval towers and a food market of exceptional quality, is the natural anchor. Royan, at the mouth of the Gironde estuary, offers a different coastal character: Atlantic beaches on the open ocean side of the Gironde point, and calmer estuary waters for families and watersports on the other.

The Gironde estuary itself, the largest estuary in western Europe, has a dramatic, wide-sky quality that is completely unlike the Mediterranean south. The vineyards of the Médoc and the Côte de Blaye are visible across the water. Oysters and mussels from the Charente are excellent. The pace of the Charente coast, less pressured than the Riviera, less crowd-conscious than parts of Brittany, is one of its lasting assets.

The Landes: Surf, Pine Forests and the Long Beach

The Landes coast south of the Gironde is the surfing heartland of France. Lacanau, Biscarrosse, Mimizan, Hossegor and Capbreton are established surf towns with Atlantic swells that arrive consistently through summer and autumn. Hossegor in particular, host of the Rip Curl Pro, one of the most prestigious events on the world surf circuit, has a surf culture and an accompanying food and lifestyle scene that make it one of the more interesting coastal towns in southwest France.

The pine forest that backs the Landes coast for over one hundred kilometres creates a particular microclimate and a distinctive landscape. Cycling through the pines between surf villages, with the Atlantic audible but not yet visible, is one of the characteristic experiences of the area. The forest was planted in the nineteenth century to stabilise the dunes, it is now a major ecosystem and the largest planted forest in France.

Who the Atlantic Coast Suits

The Atlantic coast suits families who want straightforward beach holidays with good infrastructure. The Vendée and Charente-Maritime coasts are excellent for children of all ages, long beaches, calm enough water for paddling and swimming, plenty of activity and a support infrastructure of beach clubs, crêperies, ice cream stalls and cycle hire that makes family holiday logistics easy.

Active adults who want surfing, cycling and outdoor pursuits find the Landes coast outstanding. Couples who want a relaxed coastal French summer, good seafood, long beach walks, fresh air and a pace that does not demand cultural effort, find the Atlantic coast very comfortable indeed.

When to Visit

June, July and August are the primary season. The Vendée and Charente coasts can be very busy in August; June and early July offer better conditions for those who want space on the beaches. September is excellent on the Landes coast, the surf is good, the crowds have gone and the temperatures remain warm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best beaches on the French Atlantic Coast?

The Vendée has excellent family beaches at Saint-Jean-de-Monts and Les Sables-d'Olonne. The Charente-Maritime coast around Royan and Marennes offers both Atlantic and estuary beaches. Lacanau, Biscarrosse and Hossegor on the Landes coast are best for surfing and wide open beaches.

Is the Atlantic Coast good for surfing?

Yes, the Landes coast is the surfing heartland of France. Hossegor and Lacanau have consistent Atlantic swells and well-established surf schools. Biscarrosse and Mimizan are also strong. Surf conditions are best from August through October.

Is the Atlantic Coast of France warm enough for a family beach holiday?

In July and August, the Vendée and Charente-Maritime coasts are warm and sunny, with sea temperatures reaching 19-22°C, ideal for family beach holidays. June and September are cooler but still comfortable for beach days.

How does the Atlantic Coast compare to the Mediterranean for a villa holiday?

The Atlantic coast is cooler, more variable and more activity-oriented than the Mediterranean south. It excels for surfing, sailing, cycling and family beach holidays. For guaranteed heat and pool culture, the Mediterranean south (Provence, Languedoc, Riviera) is stronger. For open space, fresh seafood and a classic French summer, the Atlantic coast is excellent.
