Avignon


Avignon is the capital of the Vaucluse department in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote D’Azur in the South of France. With an international airport and direct access from the United Kingdom via the Eurostar train service, Avignon is a popular travel destination to start your Provence and South of France holiday.


Avignon is a fine medieval walled city with massive ramparts which enclose the whole of the old city on the left bank of the Rhone river. It has a long tradition of art and culture and is famous for the Palais des Papes, which dominates the central square and was home to the popes, who moved from Rome in the 13th Century, with the city only becoming part of France again at the end of the 17th Century.


Another popular attraction, immortalised in the famous nursery rhyme, is the Pont St Benezet (Le Pont d’Avignon) the narrow cobbled medieval bridge on the outskirts of the old city, which spans some of the Rhone river, with only a few supporting arches remaining, due to floods in the 17th Century.


For those interested in art The Fondation Angladon Dubrujeaud on rue Laboureur, is a privately-owned art gallery with some treasures of 20th Century art, including works by Picasso and Cezanne.


You will find the best shopping along rue de la Republique, which starts at the outer medieval wall opposite the city train station and runs all the way to the place de l’Horloge where you can relax over a café or enjoy lunch while you watch the world go by in this busy bustling square.


Driving within the old city is a challenge as the streets are extremely narrow with very few opportunities to park.
